Newcastle vs Wolves

The Magpies are back on home soil this weekend as Wolverhampton Wanderers are the visitors to St James’ Park.

After earning just three points and with no wins in five premier league games, their challenge for the top four has taken a bit of a hit. With their last top flight victory being back in mid-January, no premier league team has amassed fewer points over that period. Even though they have faced some tough competition recently, they are matches that they should/could have come away with something from.

They may boast the best defence in the league, they have failed to keep a clean sheet in the last four games and their goal scoring record isn’t much better either as they have only found the back of the net on three occasions in 2023. Coming into Sundays fixture, they sit four points behind Tottenham in fourth place but they do have two games in hand.

Their opponents to St James’ Park this weekend have turned their season around following the World Cup, winning five out of their last 11 top-flight fixtures and climbing from bottom of the table up to 13th position. Their win over Spurs last weekend helped them climb the table but they wont be taking their foot of the gas given how close things are at the bottom of the table. They do have one thing in common with Newcastle though, their lack of goals. No side in the division has scored fewer than Wolves. Newcastle Team News: Joelinton is suspended for Sundays game after picking up his tenth yellow card of the season against Manchester City. Fabian Schar could return to the starting eleven after missing the defeat to the Citizens following the injury he picked up in the Carabao Cup final. Eddie Howe is likely to stick with Callum Wilson up front instead of Alexander Isak despite Wilson’s poor run of form.

Wolverhampton Team News: Jonny is expected to retain his place at left back. Hwang Hee-Chan and Boubacar Traore are doubts, Diego Costa could be replaced by Raul Jimenez. Adama Traore and  Pedro Neto could start.

Sutty’s Match Prediction: I fully predict Newcastle to return to winning ways this weekend. I think Sean Longstaff will have a man of the match performance and the visitors will be unable to handle his energy. As long as we get the goals then I’m not really to fussed on who scores but I hope Wilson grabs a goal or two to reignite his form until the end of the season when we can recruit again. He may be past it but whilst he’s still a Newcastle player I have realised we need to get behind him and the team. His comments this week on him being partly to blame for the recent poor run have made me respect him more. My score prediction for Sunday, Newcastle United 1 Wolverhampton Wanderers 0.
