Shelvey told NUFC TV: "Don’t get me wrong I would have loved to have gone. But there is no point in dwelling on it now. It’s happened and they’re doing fantastic over there. Congratulations to them. But at the end of the day my career is about myself and I’ve got to make sure I put the performances in for Newcastle. I want to pick up where I left off last year. If I can do that I’ll be happy.
"I just went away and enjoyed my time off really. I had a really nice rest with the family and kids. But after two weeks you just want to get back into it straight away. You miss it. I can’t lie on a sunbed for too long. The main thing was to get back in and I have been counting down the days.
“We’ve got a great squad. The gaffer has spoken about the team spirit and our work-rate. That’s the fundamentals we’ve had. That’s what got us that 10th place finish and the quality in the games. So we just have to maintain that this year and add some more quality.”
